The New York Times changed a subhed on the White House’s request. At first, it sounds terrible, but if you listen to all the points of view, it’s really just a matter of a slightly misleading subhed written in New York on a story done in DC. A source called saying they were misrepresented; the editors considered it and decided to run a correction. That’s everyday business. On Politico, comments alternatively call the Times’ team “Bush lapdogs” or “liberal media:” they must have done something right.

The Baltimore Sun has closed its Moscow bureau. Not the best timing when Putin is managing the astounding feat these days of destroying any bit of democracy left there without really going against the constitution. But what regional paper still has foreign bureaus? Sad.

Ryan Sholin tells you to get off your a** and get into the participation trend already. I’m 75% in; I have to admit I haven’t bothered with de.li.cio.us yet. Ryan also instructs you about Twitter; I created an account weeks ago, and that’s as far as I’ve gone. Now Ryan is going to jump in his seat and wake up Morrison.  

Congress passed FOIA reforms, and Charles Davis is real happy, along with all of us at SPJ, Mizzou, NFOIC and planet Earth. 

One of my hometown newspapers’ understanding of “Web first mentality” is still to have a one-page Web site with a pdf of the front page from 5 days ago. Maybe it’s simply because they were bought by the competing hometown paper that wishes to see them die a not-so-slow death. But that’s for another post.
